In today’s digital age, the stakes are higher than ever for businesses operating online, particularly for those at the forefront of communications technology. A recent case involving one of our clients, a top-tier communications platform-as-a-service provider, highlights the importance of choosing the right partners to navigate complex cybersecurity challenges.
The Customer: A Communications Leader Under Siege
Our client, a prominent communications platform based in the Southeast US, is a recognized leader in their industry, offering a vast array of real-time services including VoIP, SMS, MMS, and SIP-trunking. With high-profile clients like Google and Microsoft, they play a critical role in keeping global communications flowing smoothly. Employing over 1,000 people and generating $600 million in revenue, the company is a major player in the tech landscape.
The Challenge: A Devastating DDoS Attack
In September 2021, this industry giant faced a crisis when prolonged DDoS attacks crippled their production networks. The scale of the attack was massive, resulting in over $12 million in financial losses and inflicting severe damage to their brand reputation. In the rush to find an immediate solution, the company opted for a well-known brand, Cloudflare, based largely on its marketing rather than a thorough competitive evaluation.
Unfortunately, the decision didn’t yield the desired results. The Cloudflare service introduced high latency, limited functionality, lack of granular control, and a slow, reactive approach to combating new threats. These issues led to further downtime and a degraded service experience, extending the recovery period from days to weeks.
Solution Journey: Turning the Tide with Radware and White Arrow Technology
Recognizing the need for a more effective solution, the customer partnered with White Arrow Technology and Radware. Together, we initiated a comprehensive review of the technical challenges and developed a tailored, two-step approach to replace the ineffective, one-size-fits-all solution previously implemented.
The first step involved deploying an on-premises solution in their data centers. This provided a more proactive and granular approach to DDoS mitigation, addressing specific concerns such as SIP fragmented packet handling, self-service capabilities, and reducing false positives in traffic. Throughout a rigorous proof of concept (POC), we demonstrated the clear advantages of our approach.
The second phase of the solution saw the customer transitioning from Cloudflare to Radware’s cloud service. This hybrid cloud DDoS solution seamlessly combined on-premises protection with the scalability of cloud-based mitigation, minimizing latency while offering robust protection across 500 networks and 11 data centers.
The Radware Solution: Comprehensive, Hybrid Protection
The client ultimately selected Radware’s hybrid cloud DDoS solution, a move that dramatically improved their security posture. By combining the strengths of on-premises protection with cloud scalability, the solution delivered low-latency, highly effective protection. Additionally, the client integrated Radware’s Firewall as a Service (FWaaS) and Network Analytics to ensure comprehensive security and enhanced visibility across their infrastructure.
Outcome: A Successful Partnership and Secure Future
The transition to Radware’s solution was a resounding success. The multi-million dollar, multi-year agreement not only restored the company’s operational integrity but also strengthened their long-term security posture. The deep relationships that White Arrow Technology helped forge between our technical teams and the customer’s business units were instrumental in this achievement. Coupled with Radware’s cutting-edge technology and unwavering support, the partnership has positioned the client for a secure and resilient future.
This case underscores the critical importance of choosing the right partners and technologies when facing severe cybersecurity threats. With White Arrow Technology and Radware, our client found not just a solution to their immediate crisis but a foundation for ongoing security and success.
